ENCOURAGE EDUCATION

"I feel free and strong. If I were not a reader of books, I could not feel this way." ~ Walter Tevis

Our goal is to provide more opportunites for the students of Shoesmith and the homeless of Chicago to feel free and strong through reading.

On this page, you can read about how to donate books and what kinds of books we're most looking forward to reading.

As a fundraiser and book drive, we accept both monetary and book donations. Go to this page to donate funds!

Buzzy Bee Book Drive

The Buzzy Bee Book Drive is a fundraiser and book drive of combined forces. It began with an inspired tutor of the University of Chicago's Neighborhood Schools Program (NSP). NSP teams UChicago students with schools throughout the south side of Chicago to act as teaching assistants and tutors for kids attending Pre-K through twelfth grade. As an NSP tutor at Shoesmith Elementary, Lily works on reading skills with students in kindergarten, first, and fourth grade. Over the weeks spent with the kids, Lily realized that Shoesmith did not have a school library and that the students were always wanting more books. She decided to start a fundraiser and book drive for books for the kids.

When this idea was brought to the principal, Ms. Gates, it evolved into a greater project to unite the book drive the kids were holding for homeless people with Lily's plan. This has blossomed into an incredible joint-force project. You can read more about this project on the Projects page or more about Lily and the students of Shoesmith on the About Us page.
